What is the importance of utilizing products made of recycled plastic? Plastic accounts for 20% (by volume) of the entire waste stream. According to the EPA , in the year 2000 the amount of plastic discarded in the United States increased nearly 50% from the amount discarded in the early 90's. Not only is plastic consuming space in our landfills but it is also taking a huge bite out of our oil resources. In 1987, one billion barrels of oil went to produce plastic. This number increases each year with our increased production of plastic.
What can we do to make a difference? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and close the loop by purchasing recycled products. The primary concern about the use of plastics is the depletion of non renewable natural resources (source:Napcor), depletion of our land, our oil, our earth. The last time you or a family member discarded an empty two liter of soda did you stop to wonder where that garbage goes? If you're like most of us, probably not. Would it surprise you to learn that soda bottle will outlast you and many, many generations to follow? Today we have the luxury of not seeing all the garbage we create, but will our children be as lucky? Only if we make a difference now, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and complete the circle by purchasing recycled products.
